A luxury bed is not simply a more expensive mattress. It is a system: the base that supports it, the mattress itself, sometimes a topper, the headboard, the bed linen. Each of the brands we carry starts from a different idea of what good sleep means, and you feel the difference after ten minutes lying down, not by reading a specification sheet.
Below we describe the four philosophies you will find in our showroom on Via Gaudenzio Ferrari, who each one is made for, and what to ask yourself before you try them.
Hypnos: pocket springs and natural fibres
Hypnos has been making beds in England since 1904. At its heart is a pocket-spring system, each spring free to move independently, sewn and upholstered by hand with natural fibres: wool, cotton, horsehair and, in the finest collections, fibres such as alpaca and cashmere.
The feeling is of a bed that cradles you without letting you sink. Natural fibres let air pass through and manage the moisture of the night, which is why people who sleep warm often get on well with them. The mattress rests on a sprung base, itself upholstered: the base works together with the mattress rather than simply holding it up.
Who it suits: anyone looking for classic comfort that is springy and breathable, and who values a handmade piece built to last for decades.
Technogel: gel that spreads the pressure
Technogel works with an open-cell polyurethane gel. The gel deforms in three dimensions: rather than compressing like foam, it “flows” beneath your shoulders and hips and distributes your weight. It feels cool to the touch, and it stays stable over time.
Our showroom is home to the only VIVE point in Italy, a space where you can try the entire Technogel range with pressure-mapping instruments. It is especially useful if you wake up with an aching shoulder or hip.
Who it suits: side sleepers, anyone sensitive to pressure points, and anyone who wants a cool, even sleeping surface.
Auping: the steel mesh base and ventilation
Auping has been making beds in the Netherlands since 1888, and built its history on a patented steel mesh base. The mesh supports the mattress evenly and lets air circulate on every side: the bed breathes, and stays dry.
Many models are electrically adjustable, with head and foot sections that rise independently on each half of the bed. Auping also considers the end of its products’ lives, with mattresses designed to be recycled.
Who it suits: anyone who wants an adjustable bed or clean Nordic design, and anyone who places real value on ventilation and sustainability.
Tréca Paris: the couture of the bed
Tréca brings to Paris the idea of the bed as a piece of furniture. The Impérial, Couture and Platinum collections pair refined spring systems with headboards and bases upholstered to order, in fabrics you can choose alongside those of the rest of the room.
With us, that means something very specific: a Tréca headboard can be covered in the same fabric as your curtains or armchairs, because they all come out of the same workshop.
Who it suits: anyone who sees the bed as the centrepiece of the bedroom and wants comfort and tailoring in a single piece.
How to try them properly
A bed is chosen lying down, not perched on the edge. A few practical tips, the same ones we give everyone who visits the showroom:
- Take your time. At least ten minutes on each bed you are considering, in the position you actually sleep in.
- Come together if you share a bed. Each side can have a different firmness.
- Wear comfortable clothes, and bring your own pillow if you like: it makes more difference than you might think.
- Tell us how you sleep. Which side, what aches you wake up with, whether you run hot. These are the questions we start from.
This is why we work by appointment: the room is yours, nobody rushes you, and nobody asks you to decide on the day.
Sizes, headboards and fabrics
All four brands can be ordered in non-standard sizes. Headboards, bed surrounds and bases are upholstered in fabrics from our library, which holds collections from houses such as Dedar, Loro Piana, Pierre Frey and Rubelli. Your bed arrives finished, assembled and ready, and we take away the old one.
